I am no Bromeliad expert either. I am not sure if this one is a Vriesa or Aechmea species.
There are a lot of wild looking Bromeliad flowers, really strange and weird ones. Some of mine came from the Strybing long ago. Do they still have a good collection?

That strikes me as a rather odd-looking inflorescence for a bromeliad. Not that I'm an expert.
I have two bromeliads in my garden and one is making a flower right now! (I should like your help identifying it when it blooms.)
And I have a Guzmania in the house...I wish it would do something flowery again. Sigh.
