Visit with the Dentist

I am being threatened that I might end up something like this if I don't get rigorous about my oral hygiene and quit smoking. Sigh.

Sloth shows up in so many places.

Sloth is one of the easiest habits to overcome once you have something that motivates you. Here are some motivational thoughts that might help make good oral hygiene second nature:

Good oral hygiene is paramount. And it is so incredibly easy -- There's no heavy lifting involved, and you can even do it in your pajamas (or naked, for that matter). Best of all -- between brushing, flossing, and gargling (Tom's of Maine mouthwash doesn't contain any nasty alcohol), it all only takes ten minutes tops -- and only a few times a day. That's not even enough time to get bored. They even make ultra-soft toothbrushes these days, so you don't have to worry about damaging the enamel.

And here's the #1 motivation for everyone to take good care of their teeth and mouth:

Envision the alternative to good oral hygiene -- which would be "soaking your teeth in a glass" -- Ick. Then wouldn't you wish you had the opportunity to brush and floss them regularly again?

As for the smoking -- good luck to you. I know how hard that habit is for some people to overcome.

Don't smoke! Eww!

I've noticed that gardeners smoke. Noone at the Bot Garden does (it's illegal to smoke anywhere inside Golden Gate Park), but *a lot* of hort students smoke. Disproportionately so.

Why would that be?

I'm going to the dentist next week. First time in a year. Shouldn't be a problem tho'; I'm a regular flosser. I floss for like 20 minutes at a time. Usually while watching the news at night.

Those really do look like teeth---though not your teeth, I hope.

Both my parents were smokers and quit many years ago. My sister, who used to complain about cigarette smoke as loudly as I did when we were children, took up the habit right out of college. All these years later, and after several unsuccessful attempts, she's been off cigarettes for 7 months now. She took up running at the same time. Maybe that helped. Good luck to you, Christopher, when you're ready.
