Day Dreaming

The lawn is mowed. The taxes are filed. The laundry is dried.
The sink full of dirty dishes is another matter.
They are stacked neatly.

I have done major shrubbery chopping in the last two weeks.
I know who I am voting for on Tuesday.
It is ok if I take some time to put my Day Dreams on paper.

Procrastination maybe, but it serves a useful purpose.
Proper planning is good.
The Priorities are currently fluid.

Our House

Our house is a very, very fine house
With two cats in the yard
Life used to be so hard
Now everything is easy
(Yea Right)

You can dream though.

The first step may be a very fine and cozy garage.
I could live in that for a few years.

Those dimensions are just right -- not too big, not too small. Also, having one bathroom for each bedroom is good planning. I know that's the norm today -- not like back in the old days where most homes had, at best, one-and-a-half baths. I was just remembering how, when my sister and I were in our early teens -- our poor little brothers used to have to wait for the bathroom forever when either of us was in there getting ready for school.

You could make it work!
People lived in garages after WWII, when returning soldiers married and needed houses all at once. A family would buy a piece of land, drill a well, and build a garage/cottage. Basements were tried, but they took water.

When I was a kid in the late fifties, hanging out at a friend's garage, I noticed shadows of those early days - lines where cabinets and curtains hung, and marks on the floor where a bedroom wall once stood. My friend and I pretended the walls were still there: one half of the garage was her house, and the other half was mine.

I don't see a dining room -will the center living area be a kind of greatroom, with a table in one corner? Or is the island/cooktop the place for eating meals?

Christin's sure right about 2 bathrooms. We had 5 kids & 2 parents all sharing one... those are not good memories!

[My kids didn't listen much to Crosby, Stills and Nash. The one that blasted out of their rooms was by Madness:
'Our house, was our castle and our keep
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, that was where we used to sleep
Our house, in the middle of our street'

Annie,
What a coincidence -- Christopher and I both came from families with five kids. We even have the same sibling line-up of girl-girl-boy-boy-boy. I'm the younger of the two girls, but only by a year-and-a-half. I'd be interested to know what your birth order was too.

I like both of those songs -- the CSN&Y song was popular when I was a kid, but it still sounds good to me today. The Madness song is fun to listen to -- it brings me back to the easy days when I was in my twenties.

Old people may take more time in the bathroom than teenage girls and the idea is to have two distinct studio apartments of sorts. A dining room table could go in the main living room on the right by the stairs plus a smaller breakfast table could go on the left side of the kitchen in the top left corner of the LR, but I am thinking a closet to hold the hot water heater/furnace may need to go there.

This is very much a first draft, but the core layout is how I envision it.

The upstairs greatroom will be the Art Room and I may need to add a small balcony porch.

The house in Florida where my parents live now was bought as land in the 20's by my grandparents. It went tent, small wooden cottage, which was still standing when I was a kid. It finally fell down and was removed. Then a garage with studio above and finally the house.

I will be returning to my pioneer immigrant heritage. I am not sure about a tent though. There are bear in them thar woods.

I like that idea of making it into two adjoining studio apartments. Since it's being built for two friends who are retiring together, rather than for a married couple -- having two distinct living spaces makes a lot of sense.

Middle-age people aren't much faster. Actually, even for one person it makes sense to have 2 bathrooms - when it's time to repair, renovate, paint - you have a spare.

Christin, it's probably obvious that I'm the oldest sister. My family is Girl/Boy/Girl/Boy/Girl and I was in high school when my baby sister was born.

I love the wrap-around porch.
