Putting Things in Perspective

I have received some pictures from other cameras in our group from the hike into Haleakala Crater. This shot was taken looking across the valley between two of the many cinder cones in the floor of the crater. It says a lot to me about how tiny we human beings really are in the scheme of things.

I am the blue and white dot on the left.

I would want to climb up the cones. Do you get to do that or is it too dangerous? The lava looks like loose earth that would shift around easily. What does it feel like when you're walking on it and when you touch it?

It is a national park and an incredibly delicate ecosystem so getting off the trail is verboten. I did go off in one spot and it is very loose cinder, crunchy and hard to get a grip in, a lot like large grained dry loose sand.
